Avon Local Councils Association
County Associations of Local Councils (CALC) are representative bodies for local councils in their area and play a key role in the work of the National Association of Local Councils (NALC). They are the first point of call for all members. NALC supports the county associations to provide the best and most up-to-date guidance.
The CALC in the West of England is Avon Local Councils Association (ALCA). It is a not for profit membership organisation representing, supporting, training and advising Parish and Town Councils (Local Councils) across the area. Local Councils are the grass roots level of local government. ALCA represents 123 (just over 93%) of Local Councils in the West of England region and there are also 5 parish meetings. We provide member Local Councils with the operational information and facilitate communication at all levels of the local council network - district, regional and national
The organisation is run and managed by a Regional Committee of elected representatives from the membership - 4 Parish Councillors from each of the Unitary Authority (UA) areas, two special interest co-opted representatives and an Honorary Treasurer.
There are 2 self-administrating UA Area Groups, operating in North Somerset and Bath & North East Somerset, who strive to work in partnership with their principal authority. There is currently not a UA Group in South Gloucestershire, but we do hold an AGM to select the representatives for the Regional Committee for that area, consequently we are especially interested in recruiting South Gloucestershire parish councillors, who are interested in taking a more strategic view of the sector and developing an Area Group for South Gloucestershire, to our Regional Committee.
Click on the circles above to find out more about ALCA activity in each of the UA areas.
Collectively ALCA supports the work of approximately 1,258 local councillors, who serve an electorate of over 440,000 local residents and who utilise between them approximately £12,000,000 raised as tax precept to improve the lives of local people right across suburban and rural of the 4 West of England Unitary Authority’s areas.
Not all of the West of England has the privilege of local representation by a Local Council. The whole of the City of Bristol, the city of Bath and 4 wards of South Gloucestershire are currently unparished – ALCA is committed to developing local councils in those areas that currently lack local representation and the support a local council provides.
